I recently visited Boulder Crest Retreat (BCR) in Bluemont, VA. What a fantastic place for veterans and their families to visit for a few days or up to a week. Here is not just a vacation or therapy program, but a ‘life’ training camp. Helping veterans relearn what makes them great and engage in society with their work, community, church, etc.
In part, this place is taping into a new approach to help those with PTSD and those at risk with taking their own lives, but revisiting how they were during their deployment. In terms of their discipline, team-work, facing hard problems and hard work, and triumphing over it all. They kind of reach a peak while deployed that once they return home, they are kind of lost. They are not at the top of their game and lose focus or commitment. BCR is all about finding ways to retrain these men and women to apply what they learned in combat, the leadership, discipline, focus, commitment and turning that towards their ‘new’ life here at home.
Ken Flouts has touched on a new idea that seems to be working and getting visibility by the experts. I really like the idea that this program is not about enabling victims, but refocusing champions and leaders, and helping them lead their life here at home. Finding purpose, applying their skills, and helping others.
